Parent & Child

Some of the best conversations happen side by side rather than face to face. Parent and child days are shared time in the woods for any grown-up and child: lighting a fire together, learning traditional skills with your hands, and being properly in each other's company, away from the noise.
Sam looking on in the woods as a learner coaxes a smoking tinder bundle towards flame.

A day might take in fire lighting, shelter building, working with natural materials and cooking outdoors, but none of it is rushed and none of it is a test. Sam leads lightly, holding the practical side of the day so that the time belongs to you and your child.

These days grew out of sessions Sam ran for dads and lads, and they are now open to every family: mums and daughters, dads and daughters, mums and sons, grandparents and grandchildren, and every other shape a family takes.

You do not need any outdoor experience, and that is rather the point. Plenty of parents never had the chance to learn these skills themselves, and learning together, with neither of you the expert, is a great leveller.

Numbers are kept small so that every family gets proper attention. Get in touch to hear about upcoming days, or to talk about arranging one.

Who this is for

  • Parents and carers wanting proper time with their child
  • Families where screens have crowded out shared time
  • Grown-ups who never learnt these skills themselves
  • Children and young people who come alive outdoors
  • All families, whoever you are

How it works: In person, outdoors, across Bedfordshire, Sussex and the South of England. Booked as one-off days, with dates shaped around the families who come.

Where to start

The first step is a gentle conversation, with no commitment, to see whether this is a good fit. Everything is shaped around the individual.
